The Spirit of Article 152: Inclusive Nation-Building and the Special Status of Singapore Malays.

Dr Lily Zubaidah Rahim is Associate Professor at the University of Sydney Department of Government and International Relations, and she will discuss the contradictions associated with the rhetoric and reality of multiculturalism and equal opportunity in Singapore

Dr Thum Ping Tjin (‘‘PJ’’) is a co-ordinator of Project Southeast Asia and a Research Associate at the Centre for Global History University of Oxford. PJ will discuss the political economy of race in Singapore from the colonial period to the present, emphasising that race and politics are inextricably intertwined in Singapore.

Alfian Sa’at is an award-winning writer, poet and resident playwright at W!LD RICE. He will discuss the lived experience of being Malay in Singapore and how he has explored this in his literary works such as ‘Malay Sketches’ and ‘GRC’.
